If your only contact with me was an IM conversation six months ago I've forgotten everything about you and the conversation so you have to start over.
The above might sound rude, but instant messaging is just like a phone call, I have to interrupt whatever I'm doing and answer you. Cold-calling random people from the phone book will probably get you rudely blown off; why is the Internet any different?
